For the Sketchnotes series, I choose one artist per week and research their works and their ideas and draw one sketchnote about them.
This is a digital drawing inspired by Waubgeshig Rice's novel Moon of the Crusted Snow. One theme that stood out in Rice’s novel is his description of the winter and snow. It is reflected in the name of this novel: Moon of the Crusted Snow. The coming of winter is a foreshadowing of an apocalypse and snow is a condition that isolates people from getting help and even becomes the cause of death. This is why I choose to draw a winter, especially, a snow scene for this novel. I drew a moose to indicate the connection to the Indian reservation since Indigenous people would hunt for survival. So the moose's presence means food supply and hope inside people’s minds of a future, a coming spring. I also set up the scene at the sun rising to demonstrate anticipation to live and belief in the future since they already passed the darkness of dawn. In front of the wooden house, I drew four little figures to indicate Evan’s family and that they survived this apocalypse.
