My summer research with Professor Hooper involved analyzing various forms of Chinese media and public opinion, ranging from government-controlled television news broadcasts to foreign policy magazines to entertainment programs to video blogs. This research took place during a critical moment – amid a global pandemic. In this context, I looked at how different forms of Chinese media portrayed the U.S. and talked about various U.S. internal events, such as BLM protests against racism and police brutality. (One frequent target of mockery was U.S. President Donald Trump, who was described in starkly different terms as those ascribed to Chinese President Xi Jinping!) I also looked at how Chinese media discussed the coronavirus, China’s efforts to combat the pandemic, and negative U.S. coverage of China’s role. Finally, I looked at how different people, communicating in a variety of different genres, talked about China, and I examined how they defined or imagined “Chinese values.” This poster shows just a few examples of mainstream Chinese social media commentary in regard to several important issues of today.
