My current work, inspired by Chinese calligraphy, translates my experience of living in the in-between through abstract forms in sculpture and drawing using mixed media such as ink, clay, and plaster. I started to enjoy the fluidity of my cross-cultural identity, so I chose ink to represent such fluidity. I also focus on translating the feeling of being in-between by choosing to leave imperfections made during the process. I examine the place where I belonged in the past, and where I should go next in the future.
I explore abstract forms and organic shapes in sculpture because these patterns represent the changes in my individuality. I like to transform the lines in calligraphy into visual forms of abstraction. The fluid lines of my distorted Chinese characters show the process of choreography: my wrist and arm movement. The calligraphy and choreography both symbolize my feelings of homesickness and nostalgia. For example, my doorway sculpture symbolizes the journey of entering and leaving spaces. There is no starting or ending point; the sculpture is a continuous form outlining the frame of a doorway.
