9. Rank Your Choices

Are You Pursuing Voice, Influence, or Both?

Objective:

  • SWBAT decide whether to pursue voice (raising awareness), influence (influencing policymaking), or both.

  • SWBAT connect their learning to Question #8 “Are you pursuing voice or influence or both?” and Question #9 “How can we get from voice to change?”

To whom do you want to deliver your message? How do you do it? What talent can you tap into in the process? A critical question now you need to reflect on is "Are we pursuing raising awareness or influencing policymaking process?

Let's refer to "raise awareness" as a voice-oriented project and "influencing policymaking process" as an influence-oriented project. Please note that change requires both voice and influence and they often work in parallel. A line between voice-oriented projects and influence-oriented ones is not always clear cut. How can you understand the difference better? Which type of projects (voice-oriented, influence-oriented or both) do I want to pursue?

Reflection

Let's discuss your choices.

With a partner, or in small groups, compare your choices with others' choices. Talk about your preferences with respect to voice, influence, or both; how their preferences are similar or different; and how you might coordinate different preferences and strategies in your group.

Debrief your choices in a large group. Share what most surprised you and what new things you learned about yourself and group members from this activity. Reflect on what type of action (project) you chose and why (voice-oriented or influence-oriented or both). In the following class, you can incorporate your choices into the plans for action.
