 Communicating as a leader
Dr. Rutherford started his talk today by discussing the ways we can improve our communication skills, specifically as speakers. We watched a TED talk and dissected what made the speaker an effective communicator.
We also discussed our interpersonal communication skills. We, specifically, talked about ways to have difficult conversations like using the hamburger technique, avoiding binary thinking and using content-process shifts.
Influence
Dr. Rutherford also talked about ways we improve our influence over others by our presence, complexity, ability to be influenced and loss of self consciousness.
Life Management
Dr. Rutherford addressed each of the 4 domains of life management: physical, social/emotional, professional & spiritual. When you do something to improve even just one of these areas, it can cause ripple effects.
Major Points
Ways we communicate and how we present ourselves to others can have a major impact on our leadership.
Gestures and posture must be congruent with words. Humans are great at deceiving each other with words, but our actions often give us away.
Time and life management are massive influences in the effectiveness of a leader.
Importance to Teacher Leadership
The lessons on communication and life managment can be applied any where, in any person's life. Teachers and leaders who can effectively communicate and manage their life are able to support others.
Today's lesson was really important, not only for leaders, but just for us a teachers-- that most are burnt out on communicating and managaing time at this point in the year. It was a healthy reminder that the way we communicate and the way we manage our time is really important to our relationships. Personally, I'm a bad time manager. I always get my work done, done on time and 99.9% of the time it is even done well, BUT I'm stressed and running up to the last minute every time. As I reflected on today's lesson I was struck by how much my lack of time management puts those I'm leading in a jam. I may be someone who can pull things off at the last minute but that's not every person's personality. I need to recognize that this is something I can definitely work on. I'm still struggling with communication. I know that I communicate really well with my students-- they like the way I communicate with them and we have great rapport. I'm not so great at communicating with adults. I think this is a common issue being a younger staff member-- I'm still trying to find my voice and my place and feeling confidence when working with other adults.
I want to work on the social/emotional piece of the life management pie. I am one of those people who eats, sleeps, lives and breathes work. I need to find joy in other outlets in my life.
