Importance to Teacher Leadership
It's important how you handle conflict-- healthy conflict is important and required for growth.
Knowing your style helps you guide your decisions and actions.
After this talk I was left with quite a few questions to consider. Do we need to rebrand conflict in a positive light? How does the way we were raised impact our views on conflict? How might we salvage a relationship already injured by conflict?
I have always struggled with conflict and I mostly blame it on being an only child. I was also raised in a very tradional, southern household where we were always "on our best behavior" and overly polite. I truly believe the way I was raised has influenced how I handle conflict-- and it's not something I know how to change.
It's really easy for me to write that conflict is healthy and natural, but, for me, it's a lot harder to grasp and something I'm committed to working on as I go through my TAL journey.
I know that I have had more than one relationship injured because I did not handle a conflict correctly, or in fact, at all. My immediate action is to recognize conflict and address it head on. I hope that by beginning this recognition, I will become more skilled in how to address conflicts when the arise and know the appropriate ways to handle them.
