Importance to Teacher Leadership

I took the DISC assessment and learned that I am a high S (steadiness).
- My steadiness means that I focus on cooperating with others while working to achieve a common goal.
The DISC assessment is not the only way teachers and leaders can know about themselves, but we can use the DISC and other assements like it to learn more about our styles as leaders as well as our blindspots. This is just one tool in our toolbelt that we can use to develop our leadership skills.

Reflection

I think we can all agree that doing any sort of self exploration is super enjoyable and eye opening. I've always been a little skeptical of these quizzes, though. They are based on what we think about ourselves in a brief moment, not necessarily what is true about ourselves. Nonetheless, the DISC assessment was enlightening and fun and does contribute some knowledge about our personalities as it pertains to leadership.

My natural temperament, in a new and unknown situation, definitely aligns to the results of the DISC assessment. During the retreat I was definitely feeling nervous, uncomfortable with so many new people and a little like an imposter, wondering what I was doing there. So, naturally, my results reflected those feelings. However, I am, deep down, a very open and outgoing... dare I say it, extroverted person. I am confident and strong, but only once I have assessed a situation and become confident in my place.

Reflecting on my DISC results, I think I have been in the place of a strong S for quite a few year. But, I can recall a time in my life where I might have gotten very different results.

Action Steps

The DISC assessment does help define what characteristics I currently possess to help make me a better leader. It also helps me to recognize what blindspots I have. The actions I plan to take based on this lesson is to recognize that my strengths and weaknesses are all just a moment in time and at any point, I can learn and grow from those areas.

As I continue my leadership journey-- the way I interact with and work with others will be influenced by my understanding of myself through this exploration.
