How we make decisions
- Dr. Rutherford started today's lesson with a look at who, what and how decisions are made at schools. He noted that we "overly rely on datat and numbers because there's no way to explain what is happening in the mind of a third grader." Therefore, we use data to give the illusion of understanding.
- Dr. Rutherford explained that when we make decisions, we should still used data but it has to be combined with purpose. When we use purpose we get profound knowledge and deep insights.

Importance to Teacher Leadership

As a teacher leader, it's important to recognize that data can be valuable but only if it's purpose driven.
Teachers need a common language in order to establish their mission and vision for students. By having an OKB based in educational research, teachers can share this language.

Reflection

I was really interested in the first part of this day's lesson. Discussions about how and why we use data in education fascinates me. I am an art teacher so I collect very little numerical data-- I don't give tests or quizzes. Every part of my "data" is purpose driven because it's how I make decisions for what my students are ready to do next, or interested in doing next. On the other hand, I hear core teachers talk about data collection constantly and constantly they are frustrated by it (or if their students test really well, they're excited by it). Data, especially test scores, is just a moment in time. It does not capture what students actually know and can do.

Action Steps

As I move forward in my leadership journey I hope to use the Artisan teacher techniques to lead my team of new teachers. I did Teach Gwinnett and was introduced to the Artisan Teacher as well as the Danielson Framework during those lessons. I think that for my new teachers on my team, using the Artisan Teacher techniques will give us a common language to work on developing their skills as great teachers.
