Acrylic on stretched canvas
I saw ‘The Thinker’ pose and became disposed to use it in an art piece. The pile of clothing at the bottom matched with the topic of my next planned piece concerning overconsumption. I brightened the image’s dark tones and boosted contrast to improve its original dullness.
I wanted to depict receipts somewhere in my piece, and I stumbled upon this reference. The receipt covering his head hints guilt in relation to his purchases.
My sustained investigation question asks, “How can I illustrate the consequences of society’s advancements?”
So, I did a piece about overconsumption.
Because of agricultural and infrastructural advances, our growing populations drive increases in both living standards and the demand for essential resources. This leads to an excessive extraction of natural resources, and the growing pollution of our planet. It also degrades our environment.
Surrealism lightly inspired me and I binge-watched a lot of Dali videos while creating this piece. There’s a juxtaposition included, especially, the closed man with the thinker pose, and the man shrouded in a cloth receipt. It’s meant to represent those who flaunt their clothing, as his receipt shows the outfit’s cost. Thus, he averts his gaze towards the man without clothing, feeling shame.
I am sorry that the receipt looks janky AHH I never want to blend acrylics again :sob: I'm thinking of just switching to oils for that part to blend easier (or sticking with acrylic and just keep refining it until it looks fine), but there's still stuff I want to plan out with the frame of the piece. This shall stay in the confines of my room until otherwise but it'll definitely be complete in time for the portfolio of my exam! and in the meantime i'm gonna pump out some digital art for my portfolio as well
