My SI question revolves around societal advances and their consequences. For this piece, I decided to explore deforestation and habitat loss. 137 species are lost every day due to deforestation (Jacobo, 2021). I wanted to depict a pair of deer saying their final "goodbyes" as their forest habitat is sadly bulldozed.
This piece connects to my SI investigation because clearing forests allows economic growth and infrastructure development. Yet, that comes at the cost of species extinction and environmental degradation.
One part of this piece that turned out well was the composition, which was something I struggled with in my last piece. This time, I achieved the golden ratio composition I wanted. It was also fun to create an ink illustration again, as I hadn't worked with ink since March for AP Art. That being said, I struggled with imitating the smoke from the debris—and don't even get me started on the crane. The grid was no help with the smaller parts, so I ended up guessing most of it.
Oh yeah, that last part was just copied and pasted from the last submission.
The sky took way longer to complete than I expected, and I was also juggling a ton of FBLA artwork with Michaela over winter break. On the very bright side, I was able to include this piece in my college applications, and I’m hoping it helps me get in :D. Now that second semester is here, my extracurricular obligations and college application stress are behind me, so I can fully dedicate myself to creating art for my AP exam in May. Having only two pieces at the moment is lackluster, but regardless, it’s going to be so much fun! I am currently working on one of the pieces for my next deadline right now, and I plan on likely submitting two digital pieces for it to make up for it.
