My SI question revolves around societal advances and their consequences. For this piece, I decided to explore deforestation and habitat loss. 137 species are lost every day due to deforestation (Jacobo, 2021). I wanted to depict a pair of deer saying their final "goodbyes" as their forest habitat is sadly bulldozed.
This piece connects to my SI investigation because clearing forests allows economic growth and infrastructure development. Yet, that comes at the cost of species extinction and environmental degradation.
One part of this piece that turned out well was the composition, which was something I struggled with in my last piece. This time, I achieved the golden ratio composition I wanted. It was also fun to create an ink illustration again, as I hadn't worked with ink since March for AP Art. That being said, I struggled with imitating the smoke from the debris—and don't even get me started on the crane. The grid was no help with the smaller parts, so I ended up guessing most of it.
Anyway, here’s my actual commentary: This is one of my favorite pieces ever. I love how it turned out, which is super rare for me. Initially, this piece was supposed to have a sky, but I’m not exactly sure what direction I want to take with that. For now, I left it blank. While it does add to the unfinished vibe, it also focuses more attention on the deer (yay).
My idea for revision is to add a very starry sky and retitle the piece Star-Crossed Fate, since "star-crossed" implies bad luck. I think that will be my plan moving forward. I deeply apologize for submitting this late. I could blame it on the fact that I was gone for two weeks, but honestly, I was just overly ambitious and should have scaled it smaller. Then again, working on a larger scale allowed for so much more detail, and I’m really happy with how those details turned out. I'm not even upset at the late point reduction I'm about to receive
