Prior Knowledge Activities
Prior knowledge activities can be included in many things, before learning and after learning. Before learning prior knowledge, tools could be mind maps, listing previous knowledge, what you know discussions, KWL charts, etc. Some after lesson activities could be like assessment tools, some of these include digital resources like kahoot, quizlet, quizzz, gimkit, Flipity, Plickers, etc. All of these activities help to provide information in a way that students are able to pesonalize what they already know, and then learn and study from them.

Game Based Learning
Game based learning is such an engaging way of teaching and learning. Students more than likely already play games at home and do that for fun, so bringing that to the classroom will always be a positive way to learn. Game based learning helps students to put themselves in other shoes and work through a story, that can be throughout history, historical events, real world events, or current events. Students get first-hand experience and are able to understand what is going on, and what historical characters may have gone through, this can develop empathy and active learning. Home | iCivics
Teaching by Telling a Story
Teaching by storytelling is more engaging than the normal/old school teaching of historical events. This way of teaching gets all points of the lesson and events/skills taught, while keeping students engaged in a sequenced telling of events that is built up to be told like a story. You can also use a primary sources lesson or activity to teach by story telling. Project/Problem Based learning
Project based learning is learning through and while learning about and creating a project. Students work through real world experiences and meaningful projects. Students get knowledge and work on specific lesson skills through a period of time to work on and complete the project. Students can use Problem based learning to solve real world problems in a student based problem solving activity. This also works 21st century skills and problem solving skills through a social studies learning experience. Concept Maps
Concept maps can be a great learning tool and resource that the students can make using their own knowledge and newly learned ideas and events in history. This can be used for learning anything, and getting the ideas and concepts from lessons more firmly understood. These concept maps are an easy way to track what students have learned for teachers, and help students go back and easily refresh and reflect on what they have learned, and how it is all connected.
