During the first week of June, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a deeply enriching Erasmus+ training course in Helsinki, Finland, focused on one of the most fascinating and crucial topics of our era: Artificial Intelligence and its ethical implications. This intensive week of learning and debate was made even more rewarding by sharing it with a wonderful group of colleagues of various nationalities, creating a truly multicultural environment. Throughout the course, we delved far beyond the technical aspects of AI, focusing heavily on the responsibility that comes with its development. We analyzed how algorithms can perpetuate and even amplify human biases if not trained on equitable data, and we discussed the vital importance of designing inclusive technology. We also debated the fine line between tech personalization and privacy invasion under current European regulations, the future of the job market, and the necessity of AI transparency, emphasizing that these systems cannot remain "black boxes" to the public.
But the experience was just as vibrant outside the classroom, as our international group spent the long, sunlit Nordic days exploring the stunning city of Helsinki together. We marvelled at Oodi, the Central Library, which is a masterpiece of modern architecture and a hub for community technology that perfectly matched the spirit of our course. We walked through the majestic Senate Square to admire the iconic White Cathedral, took in the historic contrast of the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral, and caught a ferry to the sea fortress of Suomenlinna, where we shared laughs and cultural traditions while exploring its old tunnels and seaside cliffs. We even embraced the local lifestyle with strolls through the design district and a traditional Finnish sauna experience. I return home with a mind full of new perspectives on how to build a more ethical and human-centered technological future, and with immense gratitude for the cross-border friendships and knowledge shared during this unforgettable Erasmus week.
