Crownover Orchestra Families and Students,
We've had a very smooth start to our 2025-2026 school year in the orchestra program. Thank you so much for taking the time to look over all of the back-to-school sign-up forms and flyers the students brought home the first week of school. Just a reminder that our Handbook and all of our forms for private lesson, school instrument usage, etc. are up year-round on our Handbook and Forms page if you need to look over anything again.
Students brought home a printed calendar the first week of school just before we ended up having a major change to our November concert (that is now taking place in December). Students received an updated calendar and I had them available at Open House night as well. If you still have a blue calendar please disregard that version and begin using the yellow one the students were given to bring home. You can keep up with our calendar year-round on the Calendar page of our website, which shows a monthly google calendar, or, by clicking the link to our calendar under "Current Files" on our home page, which takes you to a list version. We had a few events that had to be listed as To Be Announced for now, so it would be great if families could make it a habit to check the calendar regularly.
I am looking forward to seeing many of our students and family members at our back to school party on September 10, and of course at our Fall Concert on October 17. This year, I am celebrating my 20th year of teaching and my 20th at Crownover. It's been a great place to teach for the past 19 years and I know the great group of kids we have this year is going to make it an extra special year for everyone!
~ Ms. Harvey

We are looking forward to seeing many of our students and families at our annual back to school party for orchestra. This year we are continuing our tradition from the past few years and hosting a skating party at Interskate!
Students will pay their $10 entry fee at Interskate and will also need to turn in a paper waiver to skate. Students will receive a copy of the waiver in class to bring home.
Students are allowed to be dropped off and picked up for the event. Ms. Harvey and Mr. Napier (Harpool Orchestra) will be on site throughout the event. We ask that parents stay to supervise any siblings of one of our orchestra students that choose to stay.
When and What:
Now: Set up account and add contacts
9/6: Fundraiser opens
9/8: In-person presentation during class by fundraiser representative. Prizes given to students who have their accounts set up correctly.
9/23: Fundraiser closes
Our fall fundraiser is set to begin on September 6. Students have all received an instruction letter with a QR code for the free Money Dolly app that is needed and some instructions for setting up an account. We are asking that all students have their account set up before Monday, September 8. On 9/8 we will have a presentation from a representative from our fundraising company during class, and students who are correctly set up will receive a prize just for having their account set up.
Students who feel comfortable beginning the fundraiser when it opens on 9/6 are welcome to. One of the great things about this fundraiser is that all of your time commitment is on the front end - setting up your account and loading contacts into your contact list. Once the fundraiser begins, all you have to do is send out the introductory text to your potential supporters and your work is done! Your supporters will receive a few texts throughout the fundraiser with instructions to donate or shop. After the fundraiser is over, they will not continue to receive any sort of communication. Your supporters can support our fundraiser by 1) giving a monetary donation, 2) shopping for items in the fundraiser shop, or 3) purchasing a digital discount card with savings at many local businesses.
Why?
While we do receive a budget from the school district for some basic classroom instructional needs, most of what we spend in every given year comes from fundraising proceeds. Bus transportation to our field trips alone accounts for thousands of dollars of expenses per year. A program of our quality also spends hundreds per year in contest entry fees, clinicians and sectional coaches for contest prep, snacks and food for some after school/evening events, and general classroom supplies and instrument maintenance.
Our students always take their fundraiser participation seriously and our program traditionally raises everything we need for the year during this fundraiser. If this is the case again, we do not need to ask your time to conduct another fundraiser the rest of the year!

Fundraiser Tips and Reminders:
If you or a supporter prefer not to use the assigned app for our fundraiser, monetary donations are always welcome to be made directly to our orchestra through cash or a check made out to RCMS Orchestra. Any direct donations outside of the app do not count towards prizes at the end of the fundraiser, though, because those are provided by the fundraising company we use.
You will need to add your adult contacts to your fundraiser (adult relatives and family friends that might be willing to support your fundraiser). If you join the fundraiser on the student's phone, you can add a parent as a "helper" and they can add contacts to the account from their phone.
Students who are in 2 fine arts classes are advised to enroll in the fundraiser for the first class they have in their schedule. For example, if a student has art 1st period and orchestra 2nd period, they will enroll in art. If a student has orchestra 3rd period and theatre 5th period, they will enroll in orchestra.
Make sure you use the QR code for your class and it says the correct class on the home screen in the app. Orchestra, band, choir, theatre and art all have different QR codes.
Prelude $35, Philharmonic $45, Chamber $60. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch may qualify for a reduced fee. Please ask Ms. Harvey for the reduced rate amount for your child if she has not already sent that home, or if there are any questions about the amount.
Each orchestra student is required to pay a yearly activity fee to cover materials and activities not funded through any other sources. A full description of the fee amounts and what this fee covers can be found in our Handbook.
Any student using a DISD instrument is expected to pay at least 50% of the required fee by 10/3. If you are not sure of the amount of your fee, please consult the information letter for the Cello-Bass School Instrument Usage, or the DISD Instrument Fee Reduction Program forms on our Handbook page.
This week (week of 9/1), the orchestra received our first weekly practice record of the year. We will turn in our weekly practice log each Monday, beginning 9/8, for a grade throughout the year. We ask that students get a parent signature or initials once per week on their log to help ensure accuracy on their reporting since most practice is done at home for most students.
We never want practice logs to be a burden for families. In the early stages of learning an instrument, extrinsic motivation such as logs, grades and rewards, can be important to developing the student's practice habits, organization, and work ethic. Students will also complete a weekly journal entry as a part of their grade. Individual practice is the most important tool for each student's progress and the progress of our group as a whole. We want students to learn to see individual practicing as a commitment to their own growth and also to their team.
All Prelude and Philharmonic students are required (for a grade) to attend their scheduled after school rehearsal prior to the concert. This is the only time both class periods of these ensembles get to rehearse their concert music together. The rehearsal takes place in the orchestra room. Students should be picked up promptly at 5:00 at the back of the school (behind cafeteria).
The night of the concert, students are required to be in their seats at their assigned call time to ensure our tuning and warm-up procedure starts on time as well as our concert. Prelude 5:45 warm-up on stage, Philharmonic 6:10 warm-up in orchestra room, Chamber 6:30 warm-up in band room. Students maybe dropped off at the back doors of the school for their warm-up. Parents may also take a seat in our cafeteria and wait for the concert to start.
Dress Code: This year, our Fall Concert is wild west themed! Instead of a traditional formal attire, for this concert, students are allowed and encouraged to wear western clothing or accessories. Students who prefer not to wear western attire are welcome to wear our orchestra t-shirt and jeans.
Concert Etiquette is a required part of our orchestra TEKS and DISD orchestra curriculum. Students will receive a major assessment grade for each concert. Students will be taught detailed guidelines on audience and performance etiquette using this instruction sheet and will be asked to sign a concert behavior agreement.
It has come to our attention that Mav Fest at Hawk is scheduled for the same night as the orchestra Fall Concert. Yikes! Unfortunately our fine arts calendar was put in place last Spring and we really can't change this date. Traffic into the campus and parking may take longer than normal. Please allow more time than usual to park and walk to the cafeteria.
Shadow Ridge Middle School - LISD
Chamber Orchestra students expected to participate, all other students optional.
Time assignments will be given closer to the audition date, and the process takes each student about 2 hours. Please let Ms. Harvey know ASAP if you'd like me to put an AM or PM request on the student's entry - only for major conflicts that you are trying to work around.
All-Region sectionals will begin next week (week of 9/8) to help students prepare for the upcoming audition. Sectionals last until 4:30 after school. Students should be picked up at the back of the school by the cafeteria. Students planning to audition should attend their weekly sectional unless there is a major conflict. The sectional days were chosen in order to accomodate the schedules of the most students in each section.
Monday - Violins
Wednesday - Violas
Thursday - Bass
Friday - Cello
Our region offers local businesses the chance to advertise in our digital region concert program for a donation to our region (TMEA Region 2). Donations help keep the cost of participation in region auditions and the clinic/concert low for our students and schools. The program is seen by the families and supporters of over 300 participating students during our clinic/concert weekend in December.
If you or someone you know may be interested in purchasing an ad, more information can be found in the All-Region Sponsorship Letter. Interested individuals or businesses can indicate their donation preference on the All-Region Sponsorship Form.
Fiddle Club will begin meeting every Tuesday 3:45-4:30 in the orchestra room year-round, starting Tuesday, 9/9. Students in fiddle club will learn music in a variety of styles, including jazz, American fiddle tunes, Celtic fiddle tunes, and mariachi. Students who attend fiddle club should be picked up promptly at 4:30 each Tuesday at the back of the school (behind cafeteria).
Please remember that in accordance with new state law, any student attending a club needs to have parent consent using the district's club authorization form. Students cannot attend any clubs until this is filled out by a parent.
Please visit the district's Student Clubs page to fill this out if you haven't already.
Beginning the week of 9/8, Crownover will have an altered bell schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays to allow for an extra period called "Cowboy Time." Cowboy time will be a mixture of required classes students are enrolled in due to tutoring or make-up needs, as well as choice sessions students can sign up for themselves. For the next 2 months, orchestra sessions will be for all-region music help. Each session will be labeled "all-region sectional" and only students trying out for all-region should self-enroll in those sessions. Students will learn more about this in orchestra class.
The portal used for scheduling is called the RtI Scheduler and it is an app in the students SSO home screen (if it's not on your first page of apps you may need to search for it). There is also a help video for students to learn how to use the Scheduler.
New state laws have gone into effect regarding access to curriculum documents. Our campus and district orchestra curriculum resources can be found year-round in our Orchestra Handbook. The Class Description section details the materials that will be used in each level of orchestra class. The Grading Policies section outlines what students will receive grades on in orchestra class, and includes links to the state TEKS for orchestra, as well as a folder of DISD orchestra curriculum documents.
Please let Ms. Harvey (aharvey@dentonisd.org) know of any questions or concerns about materials or curriculum used in the Crownover Orchestra classes. For questions about district-level instructional materials, please reach out to the DISD Fine Arts Office at finearts@dentonisd.org.
While we have many current and former students who are doing AMAZING things, we strive to highlight accomplishments of our students in the musical world whenever possible.
Crownover Orchestra is thrilled to announce the appointment of former student Christian Luevano to the position of Associate Principal Bass of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Christian attended Crownover from 2015-2018. In his high school career at Guyer, Christian was a 4-year Texas All-State Orchestra member, including multiple 1st-chair placements. In his senior year, the Guyer Orchestra commissioned a piece for Christian to perform from Argentinian composer Andres Martin. Noche de Alebrijes (video below) was premiered by Christian and the GHS Orchestra. After graduating in 2022, Christian accepted a prestigious conservatory placement at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. It is outstanding for Christian to receive such a high-level placement his first round of major professional auditions, especially at such a young age. I know that I will be catching as many DSO performances this year as I can and I hope to see many of our current and former RCMS students there!
Watch a video of Noche de Alebrijes, performed by the Fort Worth Conducting institute Orchestra.
Conducting the orchestra is former Crownover Orchestra student Stephan Gomez, who just completed a master's degree in conducting from Baylor. Performing in the bass section you will see former Crownover Orchestra student Ian Grems, who holds a master's degree in bass performance from UNT and is a member of the New World Symphony in Miami.
This fall, former Crownover Orchestra student Stephan Gomez is beginning his doctoral studies in conducting at the University of Kentucky. Stephan completed his master's degree in conducting at Baylor University in the spring of 2025. Just after high school, Stephan was personally selected by maestro Miguel Harth Bedoya to conduct the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in their workshops for young conductors. More recently, he attended Nebraska Music Educators Association, where he conducted the Omaha Symphony Orchestra in a masterclass with music director Ankush Kumar Bahl. Stephan also serves as Teaching Assistant at The Texas Conducting Institute and has recently been named an Assistant Conductor of the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra.
Stephan conducted the final piece of the RCMS Full Orchestra concert his 8th grade year in 2014.
Also in this orchestra were Amanda Garrison, who now holds a music education degree and is an orchestra teacher, Abbey Ekrut, who recently graduated with a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Baylor, and Teresa Lee, who has a bachelor's degree in music from UNT and is currently pursuing a master's in piano performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee!
