Orchestra Students and Families,
We have had a great year so far with many rewarding experiences and accomplishments. Even though we only have a few more weeks of school left, we have several important activities packed into our final few weeks together. Thank you for taking a look at important information about our final events of the year so that we can finish out the year with smooth and rewarding experiences for our students.
Note that all students should attend the after school rehearsals for their group, even if they are not attending the upcoming field trip. The rehearsal for each group is also for the Spring Concert, which all students perform on.

Students who are ineligible for these extra-curricular activities are still able to perform on our Spring Concert, as our concert is a curricular, graded assessment.
Click the link for each trip to review the information provided on the student's permission form.
May 8 - Chamber and Philharmonic to NRH2O Contest
At this time we still anticipate arriving back at school around 8 pm
We could still use a couple of additional parent chaperones. Please let Ms. Harvey know if you'd like to attend. Chaperones may ride the bus with us or travel in their own vehicle. If you have not done so yet this year, please complete the DISD Volunteer Background Check Form ASAP.
Students will have lunch at school as normal before we leave. Please do not skip lunch as you won't be able to use your meal ticket at NRH2O until late afternoon after we have performed.
Please wear normal school clothes to school with your orchestra t-shirt on. Shorts are fine for the performance. You will change into swimsuits after we perform at the park. Students also performing in band or choir may choose a shirt to wear. You do not need to change shirts in between performances.
Students may drop off their bags in the orchestra room before school to not have to carry them around for half the day. School backpacks can stay in our room while we are on the trip.
May 15 - Prelude Orchestra to Pride of Texas Music Contest at Alley Cats
At this time we still anticipate being back to campus around 5 pm.
Parents are welcome to attend the trip. You do not need to officially sign up with Ms. Harvey ahead of time, you may check in at the contest desk at the entrance and pay the entrance fee directly to the contest organizer (more info on the link above). The address of the facility is Alley Cats Entertainment and Putt-Putt Golf Center, 609 NE Loop 820, Hurst, TX 76053. If you haven't done so yet this year, please complete the DISD Volunteer Background Check Form.
Students who are also performing in choir that day should follow choir instructions for departure time (first thing in the morning). Those students will travel to the contest with choir and then meet up with orchestra later in the morning for the orchestra performance. Students should arrange to bring their orchestra instrument with them on the choir bus or speak with Ms. Harvey about the possibility of us bringing it with us later on the orchestra bus. Students may wear their choir shirt the whole time, they are not required to change, but they are welcome to if they want to.
Students can bring a small bag on the trip with us as needed. School backpacks can stay at school in our room while we are gone. Students don't need to bring much for school as they will only attend 1st period before leaving on the trip.
Students need to wear their orchestra t-shirt at all times. Please wear it to school that day. Shorts are fine for this trip. Check the weather and consider wearing shorts and bringing water if it will be hot that day. Some activities at this facility are outdoors (mini golf, rides, etc.).
Tuesday, May 12 - 7:00 pm - RCMS Cafeteria
We are looking forward to wrapping up our year with a final performance at home in our cafeteria. Our Spring Concert will feature pieces learned for spring competitions, a performance by our fiddle club, and performances by 2 honors award winning small ensembles. We will also recognize a few end of year awards and conclude with an end of year slideshow. This concert will be a little longer than previous concerts due to these extra aspects of this program.
Student call times (required warm up times) - same times as Fall Concert:
Prelude 6:00 - Orchestra Room
Philharmonic 6:15 - Stage
Chamber 6:30 - Band Room
Doors will be open by 5:50 for 6th grade arrival. Parents may enter any time after 5:50 to get seated in the cafeteria. For groups with early call times, parents may also drop off and return later. Please help us by keeping the cafeteria fairly quite while we complete some warm-ups on stage.
Dress:
Prelude - Orchestra t-shirt and jeans
Philharmonic and Chamber - Formal Uniforms. Please start returning uniforms to Ms. Harvey in the orchestra room as soon as possible - the day after the concert if at all possible. Girls return blouse, skirt and garment bag. Boys return only tie and garment bag if you checked one out (the black shirt is yours to keep).
This year our annual Solo & Ensemble Recitals featured 77 performances across 3 nights. Students volunteer to perform on the recital to present their pieces and to prepare for the competition. I am amazed every year at how many students volunteer to participate in this event and the amazing quality of performances we get to hear. Thank you to all students and to our audience members for participating in this event. As you will see below, this extra level of preparation helped our students bring home some great scores from the contest.
On Saturday, April 11, Crownover had over 70 students participate in the DISD Middle School Solo & Ensemble Contest that was held at Calhoun MS. Crownover had the most 1st division ratings of any campus. We also had the most 1+ Honors Awards, over twice as many as any other campus. Our students prepared very well for this event and came away with a great experience, great comments from their judges and great ratings.
This year's contest included 9 judging rooms that totaled over 450 performances. Each judge listens to a little over 50 performances and at the end of the day, awards Honors Awards to the top few soloists and/or ensembles they heard from the whole day that demonstrated exceptional preparation and quality respective of the student's grade level.
Please join us in congratulating the following students for being awarded Honors Awards by their judges:
6th Grade Solos: Delsi Amponsah, Claire Kwon, Clara Lybrand, Kylie McMahan
7th Grade Solos: Jenna Bautista, Finn Parson, Hayden Weaver
8th Grade Solos: Merida del Carpio, Dorothy Kyrias, Daniela Silva
Ensembles:
David Harris (6), Claire Kwon (6), Kylie McMahan (6), Hudson Perry (6)
Harold Amponsah (8), Samuel Francis (8), Finn Parson (7)
Bela Escobido (7), Claire Kwon (6), Arianna Matthew (7)
Opshoir Haider (8), Daniela Silva (8)
On March 20, all bass players from the GHS cluster attended our 5th annual Bass Day event. 6th-12th grade students received small group technique classes with UNT teaching fellow Chelsea Strayer, and participated in a whole-group master class, where several students performed solos for the group and received coaching by UNT professor Dr. Gudrun Raschen.
Each Spring, our current 8th graders have the opportunity to audition for placement in one of the top 3 audition-only Guyer High School Orchestras. All 8th graders automatically advance into the GHS Philharmonic Orchestra, but can be placed in Cadenza, Intermezzo or Rhapsody (varsity) by competitive audition.
We had many students this year gain placement in these groups. Please congratulate these students:
Cadenza Orchestra - Joanna Anoop, Samuel Francis, Delilah Williams, Shawn Daulla, Ellison Riall, Persaius Smith, Ivan Hudspith, Hunter Buechel
Intermezzo Orchestra - Grace Yoon, Harold Amponsah, Jinny Choi, Oliver Hollingsworth, Opshori Haider, Mark Kagondu, Vedant Ganpule
Rhapsody Orchestra - Merida del Carpio
A couple of notes for incoming 9th graders -
Optional (but highly recommended) summer Skills Workshop at Guyer on August 12 (click link for more info).
All-State Workshop (for students planning to audition for all-state) August 11 at Guyer (click link for more info).
Don't forget about the option of signing up for an orchestra summer camp. Camps are a great way for students to keep up their skills over the summer while making new friends.
After I sent out our summer camp list on our last newsletter I became aware of another camp opportunity through the Youth Symphony of Denton. This camp appears to actually be a little cheaper than the UNT camp. I have added a link to this camp on our list on our website.
Registration is now open for the summer career course option for incoming 8th graders. Taking this course during the summer allows students to get their required CTE credit while retaining an elective spot in their schedule for next year. Please view the links next to the Principles of Business, Marketing and Finance course on the DISD Summer Learning Website.
