Powerpoint is actually still an excellent vector-editing program. You can use it to create posters and other printed materials, not just presentations!
1
What size is your poster? You will need to change the size of the slide to match the dimensions of your poster in inches. To change the size of your poster, open the “Design” tab. Open the “Slide Size” menu and select “Custom Slide Size.” Enter the size of your poster in inches and click OK.
2
Do you want your poster to have a background? On the “Design” tab, click “Format Background” to choose a background. You can choose between a solid color, a gradient, and more.
3
Using rulers can help your poster layout look more professional. To make your rulers visible click on the “View” tab and then check the box next to “Rulers.”
1
Take some time to think about your layout and your assignment. What discipline is this for? Is there anything specifically expected? How will the poster be displayed? Will you pin it to a wall or will it be mounted on a trifold board? Do you have pictures or charts you need to add?
2
If you are making a trifold poster, you can add lines to help you figure out where everything should go. Open the “Insert” tab, then open the “Shapes” menu. Choose a line from the Shapes menu and use the rulers to determine where your folds should be. Draw lines to imitate the folds on your poster.
3
This is similar to creating a regular PowerPoint slide. You can add text boxes, images, charts, and shapes on the “Insert” tab.
4
When adding pictures, your images need to be very large sizes and/or in the .png format. Since you will have your poster printed, this will ensure they won’t end up pixelated when enlarged.
1
Save your poster as a PDF. This is the format the printer will want and it will open on most machines.
2
It’s a good idea to save a copy of your poster as a regular .pptx as well so you can edit it later.
3
It’s also a good idea to print a small copy of your poster in color before you send it to the printers. It will give you an idea of what the colors will look like.
