If you are going to send the file to someone else or open it on another computer, it’s a good idea to keep your project file, your text, and all your images in the same place, in the same folder. This creates a folder with a copy of your InDesign project as well as all of the images and fonts you used in the document.
Go to File > Package

We also suggest embedding your images to ensure that they print properly when you’re finished. On the right side, click on the Links menu to open the list of images. Right click on the image and choose “Embed Link.”

If you are making a booklet that will be printed out, you might want to use the Print Booklet feature. You find this under File > Print Booklet.
In the Print Booklet window, choose the type of booklet you are printing. 2-up Saddle Stitch is perfect for printing a zine you’ll be folding in half and stapling.
Before printing, check the preview tab in the Print Booklet window. If you see a pink rectangle, you need to change your layout. Click print settings and adjust the paper size and orientation as needed, then click OK. Make sure to change your printer settings so that you are printing double-sided with the paper flipping on the short edge.

If you are making a zine that you plan on sharing digitally, whether to share directly with other zinesters, to post on ISSUU, or to submit for an assignment in Canvas, you might want to save it as a PDF. PDFs are really easy to share. Go to File > Export, and then choose Adobe PDF from the drop down. We recommend Print, unless someone will need to click on a link. Then choose Interactive.

If you want to save your zine as a PDF that can be printed and folded, you need to change some settings.
On a Windows computer, go to File > Print Booklet. Check your binding options and page set up as in the Printing step. Click Print Settings. Select Microsoft Print to PDF as your printer. Click OK to return to the Print Booklet window, then click Print. You will be prompted to save your document.
On a Mac, you will need to save your InDesign file as a PostScript file. Follow the steps above, selecting PostScript File as your printer. Return to the Print Booklet window and click Print. You will need to save your zine as a .ps file. Once your .ps file is saved, open it in Preview, then export it as a PDF (File > Export to PDF).
