Repetition of styles creates consistency and elegance within your poster, helping the reader to quickly find sections, photo captions, etc. For example, you may want to make all of your document section headers Helvetica Bold 16 point; your body copy Garamond Regular 11 point; and your photo captions Helvetica Italic 8 point.
Make sure you establish what your rules are and then follow them. A common mistake is to adjust the font size within a block to make the text fit the area - do not do this! Adjust the size of the block itself. All of your general section information should be the same size.
If you start thinking like a designer, you can produce a poster that communicates clearly and shows you off as a researcher. Here are the three key design tips to keep in mind:
Color – Use contrasting colors to draw attention to key information.
Typography – Use a very legible font. Use weight and size to draw attention to important areas like section headers.
White space – Use the unmarked areas of the page to balance your design for a polished, professional look.
