Spain - Service Learning Activities
In Spain, several activities were carried out to prepare students for the main service learning activity.
We started by asking students of 3º ESO (14-15 years old) to research the problems of plastic and think about solutions to reduce it. They did it in the English subject as a curricular activity and presented it orally in class.
We also had two different workshops to teach students about recycling and the dangers of global warming. They were organized by Andújar’s City Council and imparted by external experts. Their main goal was to raise awareness about the importance of sorting the waste properly and looking after the environment. The workshops were called “Think Locally, Act Globally” and “Reciclarte”.
As one of the main service-learning activities, we gathered over 80 school students and did a cleaning activity of our Natural Park. They collected all the litter they came across throughout the path they walked. It was a fantastic experience for both students and teachers. They became more aware of how much litter there is in our natural park “Sierra de Andújar”. We also disseminated the activity on the project and school social networking sites to promote a greener attitude towards the environment.
Finally, to disseminate our project and do more on our service learning activities, we took part in Andújar’s Education Fair organized by Andújar’s City Hall. Here we talked about our project, we made passers-by think about ways to reduce plastic waste, inform them about our local waste center, and we gave them an extract of our “Green Citizen Guidelines”. We also participated in a local radio station programme in which we talked about our project and service learning activities.
