🍀Building Facade
Dutch architect Francine Houben
Dutch architect Francine Houben took inspiration from the banyan tree clusters of Weiwuying to design the sleek and fluid-shaped National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). Covering an area of 9.9 hectares, with a building footprint of 3.3 hectares, it is adjacent to the 47-hectare Weiwuying Metropolitan Park. The design seamlessly integrates with the lush surroundings, bringing theater and everyday life together without barriers.
🍀Opera House
This opera house is Taiwan’s largest performance stage, designed for opera, drama, dance, and interdisciplinary performances, featuring a fully automated stage system. The horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement includes four sections on the first floor, while continuous horizontal seating on the second and third floors enhances visual flow. The stage features an 80-square-meter adjustable orchestra pit, accommodating a full orchestra for grand operas like Der Rosenkavalier. The stage system was designed by Dutch theater consultants and installed by Austria’s Waagner-Biro.
🍀Concert Hall
The concert hall features vineyard-style seating for optimal acoustics and visibility. The main stage has 15 adjustable orchestra pit platforms and acoustic reflectors for superior sound. It also houses Taiwan’s largest pipe organ, built by Johannes Klais Orgelbau, with 9,085 pipes, offering an impressive visual and auditory experience.
🍀 Drama Theater
The theater is designed for drama and dance performances, featuring both proscenium and thrust stage designs. The thrust stage enhances interaction between the audience and performers, while the proscenium can be converted into a thrust stage. The theater operates with computer assistance, designed by Dutch theater consultants and constructed by Austria's Waagner-Biro. It includes 8 lift systems and removable seats for flexibility between stage formats. The right side of the thrust stage also has 3 lift platforms that can be converted into a musicians' area, maintaining the intimate feel of traditional theater.
🍀Performance Hall
The performance hall is designed for chamber music, solo performances, and small-scale events, with adjustable acoustics for optimal sound. It features a traditional shoebox design, with a central low wall dividing the space and providing front-side acoustic reflection. The perforated wooden panels at the back, along with adjustable acoustic curtains, are tailored to ensure the best sound quality.
🍀Banyan Square
The Banyan Plaza is a semi-outdoor public space between the Weiwuying halls, designed with continuous, free-flowing curves resembling tree hollows, using shipbuilding techniques to create the imagery of a shaded space under banyan trees. Architect Francine Houben drew inspiration from the tangled branches and roots of the old banyan tree clusters in Weiwuying, transforming them into a plaza with a sense of openness and rhythmic flow, becoming the soul of the entire building.
🍀Public Piano
The public piano at Weiwuying is a platform piano located near the east entrance of the opera house, within the Banyan Square. It is available for use daily from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and anyone is welcome to play without needing to register. Passersby who feel the urge can freely sit down and play, sharing the beauty of music with those around them. To ensure the quality of piano performance, the venue staff will conduct regular inspections of the piano each day.

A Visit to Weiwu Mi Mi Village
🍀Weiwu Mi Mi Village Introduction
❁Weiwu Mi Mi Village, also known as Weiwu Ying Painted Community, is Taiwan's first large-scale mural art community, featuring works by over 50 artists from 24 countries, with some murals reaching up to 13 stories high. These artworks are located on the north side of the Weiwu Ying National Arts and Culture Center, covering areas like Jianjun Road and Chengqing Road. Every November, the International Street Art Festival takes place, and since 2016, nearly 200 artworks have been accumulated, with more to come. Visitors can explore freely or follow the treasure map's 10 main themes, but it's important to respect the local residents and avoid causing disturbances.
🍀Large Bookshelf
❁When you come out of the MRT station, the first thing you'll see is this three-story bookshelf, with people standing beneath it looking tiny in comparison. If you look closely, the book titles seem real, not made up.
🍀Significance of the Work
❁Beneath, in addition to the two rhinos, there is also an antelope.Mì Mì Village features a total of 17 antelopes with different patterns, each carrying special meaning. This is because the area is in Lingya District, Kaohsiung City, and "Lingya" sounds like "antelope" in Chinese. It's a clever play on words that resonates with Taiwan's culture of puns.
❁The idea behind the nearby coral antelope comes from the concept of turning the antlers into coral, surrounded by swimming fish. It's a very fitting and imaginative interpretation. Each piece of artwork has its own unique meaning
