Hamasen Railway Cultural Park
Address: No. 32, Gushan 1st Road, Gushan District, Kaohsiung City
Phone: +886 7 521 8900
𒀯The Hamasen Railway Cultural Park was originally the Takao(高雄) Station during the Japanese colonial period, and it was the first railway station in Kaohsiung. It was once the largest freight station in Taiwan, playing a key role in bringing modernization to Kaohsiung. The old Takao Station Storyhouse in the park is the original station building. Located at a major transportation hub, it was destroyed during an air raid in World War II, and the current station building was rebuilt in 1947. It later became the Kaohsiung Port Station of Taiwan Railway and was registered as a historical building in Kaohsiung in 2003. The railway heritage is well-preserved, and the Kaohsiung City Government has transformed the area into a railway cultural park. The vast green space outside the old Takao Station Storyhouse covers an area equivalent to 12 football fields, and remnants of the old railway tracks can still be seen on the grass. The park also features classic nostalgic century-old train carriages, antique steam locomotives, and iron art installations.
𒀯𒀯The Origin of the Name "Hamasen"
𒀯"Hamasan" originated from land reclamation during the Japanese colonial period. This newly created coastal area gave rise to the development of a new town, including areas such as Shinbin-cho and Bin-cho. At that time, the Takao Station located in Hamasan served as the railway hub, with tracks extending toward the port docks, known as the "Bansen Line" and "Shokoko Line." The Japanese pronunciation of "Bansen" was "Ha-Ma-Sen," and local residents transliterated it into Taiwanese Hokkien as "Hamasan."
𒀯𒀯The model railway scenes, tracks, and train models
𒀯To continue the legacy of Hamasen's history, the Hamasen Taiwan Railway Museum was established. The museum's theme focuses on the local history of Hamasen and extends to the century-long railway history of Taiwan. It features a large HO (1:87) scale railway scene, tracks, and train models, combined with theatrical sound and light effects to showcase the trajectory of Taiwan's century-long railway civilization. It is currently the largest HO scale three-dimensional model in Asia.

𒀯𒀯The Interior of the Takao Railway Story Museum
𒀯The Takao Station during the Japanese colonial period and the Taiwan Railway Kaohsiung Port Station were the first railway stations in Kaohsiung. The museum preserves the atmosphere of the peak era of railway freight transport, and stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. Hamasen originally served as a branch line connecting the Kaohsiung Port Station to the cargo warehouses at the dock during the Japanese Colonial Period. It later became the origin of development around the Kaohsiung Port, playing a crucial role in the modernization of Kaohsiung. The old Takao Station Storyhouse is the predecessor of the Takao Station and Taiwan Railway Kaohsiung Port Station, established in 1900. It was once the largest freight station in Taiwan and was bombed during World War II. The current building was rebuilt in 1947.
𒀯The development of the Hamasen area is closely tied to the railway transportation at Kaohsiung Port Station, especially the "North Signal Tower," which is the only fully preserved mechanical signal tower in Taiwan, housing a valuable interlocking device. This station has witnessed the century-long development of Kaohsiung Port and has transformed into the Takao Railway Storyhouse, showcasing the peak period of railway freight transport in the 1960s and 1970s. The Storyhouse also features a railway resource room with abundant historical materials on railways, making it an important cultural symbol of the area. The park preserves historical railway tracks and displays several old trains and art installations, becoming a popular destination for both tourism and leisure.
