🎨 Kaohsiung Port Warehouse No.2 (KW2)
Service Hotline: +886-7-531-8568
Address: No. 17, Penglai Road, Gushan District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan
Located at Pier 2 of Kaohsiung Port, KW2 was originally a brick-walled, tile-roofed warehouse built during the Japanese colonial period. After the war, it was reconstructed into a reinforced concrete structure without pillars.
In 2003, it was designated as a historical building, bearing witness to the transformation of Kaohsiung Port while embracing the future of this vibrant harbor city.
🎨 Historical Background and Early Development
The Kaohsiung Port warehouse cluster is located in the Peng-Lai Commercial Port area, which was initially developed during the Japanese colonial period, primarily for the salt industry. As development progressed, dredging and land reclamation were carried out, gradually transforming the area into a commercial port. This process played a key role in the economic development of the time and laid the foundation for later port construction.
🎨 Port Construction and Economic Rise
After the long-term development, the port construction in the area was completed around 1925 and quickly became one of the most important southern ports in Taiwan. At that time, the main export goods were rice and sugar, which were key economic products for Taiwan. As the port operations matured, Peng-Lai Commercial Port gradually became an indispensable trade hub in Taiwan's economy.
🎨 Post-War Changes and Growth
After World War II, with Taiwan's economic recovery, Kaohsiung Port experienced rapid growth in the 1960s, gradually surpassing Keelung Port to become Taiwan's largest port and playing an increasingly important role in global trade. As part of Kaohsiung Port, Peng-Lai Commercial Port underwent nearly seventy years of closure and management, becoming a restricted area with limited public access.
🎨 Opening and Modern Transformation
The Peng-Lai Commercial Port Area was officially opened to the public in 2018, allowing people to freely enter and visit docks No. 1 to 10. This provides an opportunity to learn about the port's development history and experience its unique harbor views and industrial heritage. Today, it has become a popular destination for both Kaohsiung residents and tourists to explore history and enjoy beautiful scenery.
