This final unit of the kindergarten year prepares students for the work ahead in Grade 1.

In the context of explorations about frogs, students build a deeper understanding of subtraction and strengthen the connections between quantity, related number combinations, and written notation to 20.

The activities in this unit should help students learn to add and subtract to 5 with fluency, add to 10, and strengthen their understanding of place value by the end of the year.

Addition and Subtraction Story Problems

Below you will find resources to help with adding and subtracting.

Story Problem Checklist (Your child can use this checklist to evaluate their work when completing story problems.)

Play "What's the Sum" with a deck of cards

Player 1 flips over a card and begins a story problem using that number. (Ex. The farmer has 6 chickens.) Player 2 flips over a card and finishes the story using the number on the card. (Ex. The farmer bought 3 more chickens.) Both players solve the math problem with an illustration (picture, number sentence, chart, etc). If they arrive at the same answer they win the cards. If not, the cards go back in the stack. The game ends when players have won 3 cards total.

Play "What's the Difference" with cards

Place the cards in a stack. Each player selects one card. Players will work together to tell a subtraction word problem. The player with the higher card begins. (ex. Players draw a 4 and a 7. Player with the 7 begins, “There were 7 dogs at the park.” The other player continues, “4 dogs went home.” The players solve the problem. If both players have the same answer, they win the cards. If not, the cards go back in the stack. The game ends when players have won 3 cards total.

Estimating and Measuring

Below are resources to assist students in measuring.

Play "Order Up" with a deck of playing cards

Place the cards in a stack. Player 1 selects a card. Player 2 calls out, “Longest to shortest” or “Shortest to longest”. Player 1 then finds that number of objects in the room and lines them up by length as Player 2 called out. If Player 1 correctly orders the objects, he/she keeps the card. Play continues until one player has 10 cards. That player is the winner!

Play "How Many Units" with a deck of cards

*Students will need a group of short, uniform objects to use for measuring (ex. paperclips, cubes, etc.) Place the cards in a stack. Player 1 selects a card. Players search for an object in the room that measures that length of objects. (ex. Player draws a 6, players look for an object that is 6 paperclips long.) The first player to find an object wins the card. Play continues until one player has 10 cards. That player is the winner!

Tens and Ones

Below you will find resources for support with tens and ones.

Play "Groups of Ten" with a deck of playing cards

Place the cards in a pile. (Remove all10s.) Player 1 selects a card. He/she then represents that number of tens with a drawing. (ex. Player has a 7. Player draws 7 tens rods, 7 circles with 10 stars in each, 7 rows of 10 dots, etc.) Then Player 1 must state the value of their tens: “___ tens is ___.” (ex. “7 tens is 70.”) If the player’s drawing and statement are correct, he/she keeps their card. If not, Player 2 gets the card. The player who earns 10 cards first wins.

Play "Place Value Battle" with a deck of playing cards

Players sit side by side (not face to face). Players take turns drawing a card and naming the “place” (ones or tens) it will be. Cards cannot be moved once placed. Players repeat until they have both formed a 2-digit number. The player with the largest (or smallest, depending on type of play) 2-digit number wins all cards. Play continues until all cards are used. Player with the most cards wins.
