Visual Arts Concentration Requirements

Fine Arts Course Requirements:

COURSEWORK:

  • 3 Credit minimum (6 semesters) - one credit must be a semester Fine Arts course taken outside of the visual art concentration

COMMUNITY EVENTS:

  • Participation in the Festival of Arts both Junior and Senior year (exhibiting AND volunteering required)


Complete At least ONE of the following per year:

INTERNSHIPS: The student must maintain an internship log and internship supervisor must signs off on all hours

1 year = 1 credit; minimum 40 hours/year (10-20 hours per quarter, roughly 1-2 hours per week)

  • 3 Credit minimum (6 seasons including Fall, Spring, and/or Summer)

OPTION 1: On-campus Internship

      • Examples – Fine Arts Intern, Marketing and Communications Intern, Student Life Intern, Innovation Lab Intern


OPTION 2: Off-campus Internship*

      • Examples - with an artist, in a gallery or studio

      • *It is encouraged to schedule Internships during Fall Break, Winter Break, Wintermission, Spring Break, and Summer Break


OPTION 3: Off-campus Service Learning*

      • Examples - in a school, childcare or senior care center, in a church, or for a non-profit

      • Fine Arts Service Opportunities in Middleburg: Banneker Elementary School, The Hill School, Artists in Middleburg Gallery, National Sporting Library and Museum

      • *It is encouraged to schedule Service Learning during Thanksgiving Break, Spring Break, Wintermission, and Summer Break


Faculty Mentors:

  • A primary faculty mentor: Julie Fisher, Digital Arts | Karin Thorndike, Studio Arts | Jackie Washam, Ceramics

  • A mentor committee with two additional faculty to complete quarterly reviews of internship requirements as well as a final review for the One Woman Show.


Senior One Woman Show:

  • The One Woman Show will involve preparing work to hang in the student lounges during Arts Weekend.

  • At the end of the first semester senior year, students should present their portfolio work and artist statement to a faculty panel for review.

  • Presentations can include physical artworks and/or videos of recitals and performances.​


Suggested Course Sequence:

Freshman Year

1st Sem - no course required

2nd Sem - Level I: Studio Art, Ceramics, Photography, or Yearbook


Sophomore Year

(On-campus internship)

1st Sem - Level II: Studio Art, Ceramics, Photography, or Yearbook

2nd Sem - Advanced Level: Studio Art, Ceramics, Photography, or Yearbook


Junior Year

(On-campus or Off-campus Internship/Service Learning)

1st Sem - Independent Study (same medium) or Level I (new medium)

2nd Sem - Artist Portfolio I


Senior Year

(On-campus or Off-campus Internship/Service Learning)

1st Sem - Artist Portfolio II

2nd Sem - no course required
