Performing Arts Concentration Requirements

Graduation Requirements:

COURSEWORK:

  • 3 Credit minimum (6 semesters including Fall and/or Spring) - one credit must be a semester Fine Arts course taken outside of the visual art concentration

COMMUNITY EVENTS:

  • Participation in the Fall Revue and/or the Winter and Spring Theater Productions both Junior and Senior year (performance and/or technical assistance)


Complete At least ONE of the following per year:

INTERNSHIPS: The student must maintain an internship log and internship supervisor must signs off on all hours

1 year = 1 credit; minimum 40 hours/year (10-20 hours per quarter, roughly 1-2 hours per week)

  • 3 Credit minimum (6 seasons including Fall, Spring, and/or Summer)

OPTION 1: On-campus Internship

      • Examples – Theater Intern and/or Music Intern


OPTION 2: Off-campus Internship*

      • Examples - with an artist, in a gallery or studio

      • *It is encouraged to schedule Internships during Fall Break, Winter Break, Wintermission, Spring Break, and Summer Break


OPTION 3: Off-campus Service Learning*

      • Examples - in a school, childcare or senior care center, in a church, or for a non-profit

      • Fine Arts Service Opportunities in Middleburg: Banneker Elementary School, The Hill School, A Place to Be

      • *It is encouraged to schedule Service Learning during Thanksgiving Break, Spring Break, Wintermission, and Summer Break


Students will have:

  • A primary faculty mentor: Karin Thorndike, Theater | Morgan Brower, Music

  • A committee with two additional faculty to complete quarterly reviews of internship requirements as well as a final review for the Senior Solo Performance.


Senior Solo Performance and/or Assistant Directorship:

      • The Senior Solo Performance will involve preparing work to perform during Arts Weekend and the Directorship would involve assisting with the theater productions and/or musical revues.

      • At the end of the first semester senior year, students will present their concentration work for a faculty panel review.

      • Presentations can include physical works and/or videos of recitals and performances.​

Freshman Year

1st Sem - no course required (May take Chorale or Instrumental/Voice Lessons)

2nd Sem - Theater: Mainstage AND/OR Music: Chorale, Private Lessons

Sports Credit: Dance


Sophomore Year

(On-campus internship)

1st Sem - Theater: Theatre Production AND/OR Music: Chorale, Private Lessons, Music Theory I

2nd Sem - Theater: Mainstage AND/OR Music: Chorale, Private Lessons, Music Theory II

Sports Credit: Dance


Junior Year

(On-campus or Off-campus Internship/Service Learning)
