Introduction: The Lady of Shallott by John William Waterhouse. ZOOM IN CLOSE to the painting and look for details that reveal the nature of the print. What interpretation can you make about the lady and her situation? How do you know that? Look at her body language, the colors used, items that suggest other 'meanings', the setting, the use of light and shadow, etc. Consider the title. Pay attention to the details! DIG IN DEEP. Now, let's look at the How to Read Literature Like a Professor handout and see what details we can add to our analysis.
Your turn! Look through the 8 pieces. First, consider them individually. Then look at them in PAIRS. Where can you see commonalities or connections? What about contrast? What analysis points can you identify from the How to Read Literature Like a Professor handout? Also, consider the function of imagery. Discuss in your small groups and prepare to discuss whole group.
TASK: Choose ONE image for a "close reading". Why are you drawn to this image? What is the subject of the image? Look closer. What details do you see? What interpretations can you make about the characters and/or setting based on these details? What "story" is being told? How are you arriving at your conclusions?
1. Make notes, then write a 1/2 - 1 page "close reading" analysis of the selected piece.
2. Write a short poem telling the story. Use formal diction and make specific word choices to capture your analysis.
