Dear AP English Literature and Composition Student,
Welcome to Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition course! I am pleased that you selected my course. AP Lit is “a class about the ways we are human and how to discover ourselves and our voices.” During this school year, we will read, write, think, analyze, connect, and create.
This course is designed for students who desire a college-level English experience in their senior year and for those who truly appreciate and enjoy different genres of literature. Two other pluses of this course are that your grade will be weighted at the end and you have the opportunity to take an “impossibly difficult” College Board exam. In addition, this course is available for dual credit as ENG200 from Missouri State University. You can earn 3 hours of college credit if you earn a C in the course. Grades are not the defining factor of your success in this course but the expectation is that you at least try the exam at the end of the course. You should know that if you are on free and reduced lunch, the fees for the course will be waived. You do need to apply to Missouri State and you will need parent consent.
This class is a college literature class. We will read, question, discuss, and write daily. Reading out of class is required and work not completed during class should be returned completed the next class period.
“Here are some expectations for the AP Literature student:
the ability to read accurately and consistently (you should always be reading)
the ability to engage in intelligent discussion, involving active listening and constructive speaking.
the desire to learn more than the obvious or superficial
a sense of personal and social responsibility sufficient to keep up with the individual workload and to contribute meaningfully to group efforts
the willingness to accept criticism from both the teacher and peers
the patience to accept a variety of answers or unresolved questions as starting points for further thinking and exploring of ideas in works of literature.
either a good basic command of language or the willingness to work hard to catch up with students who possess that skill.”
Reading is critical to your life success and reading over the summer is the cream on the top. I would love to say we could read all the literature in one school year but that is not possible. However, we will read as much as we can and talk as much as we can. I love talking about literature with students and I cannot wait. I want to encourage you to get a jump start on your reading. Check out this list to determine what you have read and what you would like to read next. There are so many great books just waiting for you.
I look forward to an exciting year with you!
