This idea of getting students to develop a thesis is the foundation for much of what we do in FVA AP Statistics. We want the students using sound statistical principles they are learning to manipulate real world data often of their own creation.
In this case, the "Paired Data Project" had them look at the world around them in order to find data sets that can be paired with like items but that might represent some statistically significant difference.
That is the essence of statistics, gather data, analyze it, and determine if an inference from the sample is representative to the population. Then , present it.
Students were enouraged to look at the world around them in order to find instance of paired data. Specifically, we encouraged the students to find examples that they are interested in from soccer to fast-food and YouTube viewership.
Then, students set out to gather data in order to create new knowledge, new understanding of the things that they love.
This new knowledge is then presented in a set of Google Slides. So much of statistics is about showing relationships in data and creating connections where none were seen to exist before, and this is what we are trying to do in these projects.

This is a one week assignment but the students must receive approval (feedback) from their teacher that the paired data set they want to study is valid.

Students complete the introduction to the project and then make a discussion post describing their idea for a paired data study.
Once the students idea has been vetted and either approved or modified by the teacher each student is encouraged to follow the example project layout to complete the Google Slides.

Consistency of their work (Did they follow the guidelines)
Do the calculations check out?
Did the conclusion make sense?
