Assignment 4: Get Ready for Your Mentor

After reading the handout Getting to Know Your Mentor, write a short summary detailing what you learned.

The handout provided gave many important tips for success in a mentorship opportunity. The list below displays some of the tips that were most helpful to me and that I have applied within my mentorship.

  • Send a reminder email to your mentor a day or two ahead of the first day of work to confirm all of the details.
  • Dress professionally especially on the first day.
  • Be kind to everyone and attempt to learn names as you are introduced.
  • Show enthusiasm for the work you are involved in and agree to do the monotonous tasks no one else volunteers for.
  • Take initiative and refuse to waste time (yours or your mentors!). Ensure you're never sitting around with nothing to do, but also ensure you don't waster your mentor's time with useless questions or complaints.

Each of these bullet points are major points within the article, but they are also major goals of mine in my mentorship opportunity. I sent a reminder email prior to my start date confirming details and I dressed especially professionally on the first day. Every week, I strive to be kind, show enthusiasm, and take initiative. These characteristics make me a successful intern.
