Fostering
If you found an animal in need or a litter, we are happy to help if you can foster. We do not have a large network of fosters to be able to swap animals between homes at this time. Unfortunately, we can only help the community if the community works with us.
The following are necessary steps to have a successful fostering relationship with our organization:
Complete a foster application once you have read all of the information below.
We will need to schedule a time for you to come to our facility in Long Beach with the fostered animals for vaccinations, deworming, flea meds and weight check ups. These occur every 2 weeks for puppies/kittens.
Once the pet is healthy and over 3 pounds, they can be spayed/neutered. We will schedule a date with our vet for you to drop off and pick them up. The pet now is officially adoptable.
Adult dogs will be heartworm tested. If they are positive, they will need to go on a 2 month treatment plan. They cannot be adopted while heartworm positive.
We will handle the adoption. Anyone interested in adopting the animals will need to complete an application on our website. Applications are reviewed in the order they were received.
Foster have the ability to adopt the animal for a lowered adoption fee. Communication is key. Once the animal is listed for adoption and has an approved application, the foster is no longer able to adopt this animal.
Once our organization starts utilizing resources on the animal, the animal belongs to the organization and cannot be given away or adopted at the fosters discretion. They will be responsible for all vetting and staff time (without discount) should they do so.
Food and supplies are available. Contact us and we will arrange to have it available for the foster to pick up at our facility in Long Beach. When items are not available at our facility, we will order the items online and have them delivered to the address on the foster application.
Puppies are never to go outside, placed on floors walked on by outdoor shoes, or by other dogs that walk in public areas such as neighborhood walks or dog parks. Parvo Virus can be tracked into your home on your shoes. Puppies should have a contained area. Playtime in the house is acceptable if the floors have been sanitized right before playtime.
Changes in poop, eating habits, or energy levels must be reported immediately and no later than 24 hours. Failure to do so may result in death of the animal.
Do not mix litters unless approved by For Pet's Sake Rescue. Do not add orphaned animals in with the current fosters.
Adult dogs must always be on leashes while in public areas.
Cats must always be in carriers when they leave your home.
Neonatal kitten care
What is a neonatal kitten? These are kittens 0-4 weeks old. It is important to learn how to properly care for these kittens ESPECIALLY when they do not have a nursing momma cat.
