National FFA History
Founded in 1928, the Future Farmers of America brought together students, teachers and agribusiness to solidify support for agricultural education. In Kansas City's Baltimore Hotel, 33 young farm boys charted a course for the future. They could not have foreseen how the organization would grow and thrive.
Since 1928, millions of agriculture students - no one knows exactly how many - have donned the official FFA jacket and championed the FFA creed. FFA has opened its doors and its arms to minorities and women, ensuring that all students could reap the benefits of agricultural education.
Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. Now, the organization is expanding the nation's view of "traditional" agriculture and finding new ways to infuse agriculture into the classroom.
Forest City FFA Chapter History
The vocational agricultural program started in Forest City in 1930, and on January 14, 1931, the state association granted the "Forest City" chapter a charter. Because of several problems with the local chapter, the state revoked the charter until April 19, 1935, when advisor H.P. Sweany reapplied for charter under the name "Pilot Knob Chapter" in Forest City. Since that time the state let the local group reclaim the original name present on the first charter. 39 members comprised that first class of Greenhands in 1935 (Greenhand is the name for first year members), and they were: Burt Anderson, Harold Arthur, Milton Boman, Amery Charlson, Harvey Gelner, Gordon Hall, Dale Hodson, Lyle Jefson, Robert Keel, Kennes Kingland, James Lovick, Harold McWilliams, Paul Martinson, Cecil Meineke, Russel Meineke, Lyle Miller, Glen Monson, Robert, Myrrissey, Allen Moklestad, Gordon Nelson, Kenton Nelson, Mauritz Nelson, Vernon Nelson, Layton Nonweiler, Marvin Norland, Eugene Otis, James Otis, Robert Rasmussen, Roy Rensink, Gerald Samuelson, Kermit Schultz, Glen Smith, Earl Steiff, Paul Steiff, Arne Syse, Harland Thompson, Terry Thompson, Paul Walton and Harold Wheeler.Â
