Child Development 1 focuses on growth and development - physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth and development of children. The course is focused on providing students knowledge and skills essential to quality care, practical guidance strategies and hands on experience working with preschoolers in the pre-school laboratory. Students learn to create environments that promote optimal development and explore factors influencing a child’s development from conception through childhood. Students will have numerous opportunities to engage in service and project-based learning throughout the course. Students will also be encouraged to participate in Career Technical Education Student Organizations.

Early Childhood Education 1 is designed to provide students with hands-on opportunities to actively explore and observe the world of children and prepare them for educational and administrative careers in the field. This course provides an in-depth study of career paths, developmentally appropriate practices, curriculum development, safe and healthy learning environments, and collaborative relationships. Integration of the Family and Consumer Sciences student organization, Family Careers, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), enhances this curriculum.

Prerequisites: “C” average Early Childhood Education 1, teacher recommendation
Early Childhood Education 2 is an advanced course focusing on the competencies needed to plan, guide, and care for young children in a safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment. Students can acquire certification in pediatric safety, CPR, and first aid. Students interact with professionals in the field and participate in various school-to-work activities. Student laboratory/field experiences may be school based or in the community and include job shadowing and internships.

Prerequisites: Child Development 1, ECE 1, “C” average in ECE 2, teacher recommendation
Continuation of work-based learning is provided through local schools and child development centers to provide a strong work-based learning experience. Employability skills are highly referenced and students are provided with guidance to prepare them for their college or career choice.
Teacher Cadet -Dual Credit Experiencing Education 373500EW

Prerequisite: Teacher Invitation and State Criteria
This course is taught in conjunction with Winthrop University and will give students the opportunity to earn three credit hours from the University (EDUC 175). Teacher Cadet is designed for students interested in learning more about education. The course includes activities, projects and observations, planning and teaching lessons. A field experience is an integral part of the course.

This course focuses on the dynamics of human learning and the psychological principles that serve as the foundation for educational practice. The general goal is to introduce students to the field of educational psychology and apply the concepts, theoretical principles, and research findings from the discipline of psychology to the classroom. Major emphasis is placed on assisting students in gaining a functional knowledge of the ideas explored.

Introduction to Teaching 1 is designed to prepare students for careers in the education field. This course will examine careers in early childhood, elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education. Students will explore the foundations of education, brain development, teaching strategies, classroom management, and instructional planning and assessment. Integration of technology, professionalism, and soft skills are also integrated throughout the course work. The elements of the course will offer opportunities for students to experience work-based learning. Students will be encouraged to participate in Career Technical Education Student Organizations.

Introduction to Teaching 2 is an advanced level course that builds on skills developed in Introduction to Teaching Level 1. Students develop a higher level of proficiency through authentic learning experiences. Students plan engaging lessons, enhance communication and presentation skills, explore school-societal relationships, and demonstrate professionalism. There is an extended learning experience where the student will go into schools and work with a mentor teacher. Professional dress is required. Students will be encouraged to participate in Career Technical Education Student Organizations.
