*The 2025-2026 Program of Studies is in the process of being updated. Please forgive any errors.*
The Cosmetology Program is designed to prepare students to qualify and successfully complete all requirements for a South Carolina Cosmetology license. Students receive training that follows the guidelines and regulations established by the South Carolina Labor, Licensing, and Regulation Cosmetology Board. The course of study includes Sanitation and Safety, Professionalism and Salon Management, Sciences of Cosmetology, Professional Hair Care Skills, Professional Nail Care Skills, Professional Skin Care Skills, and Unassigned Specific Needs. Instruction in chemistry, bacteriology, anatomy, and physiology of the face, head, arms, and hands is incorporated by means of theory and practical application on both mannequins and live models.
Students must complete an application to be considered for admission into the cosmetology program. This program requires a significant commitment, and consistent attendance is crucial for both success in the program and meeting licensure requirements.
Completer Requirements: (1000 Cosmetology hours and 540 Academic hours equals 1540 hours required and a minimum of 8 units to be a completer.)
Cosmetology 1 & 2 (2 units each) (615000CD, 615100CD)
Grade: 11
Cosmetology 1 & 2 is a three-hour course (requires 2 blocks) that meets Monday through Friday for both semesters. Class time focuses on studying relevant theory, while lab sessions provide opportunities for practical application, including practice on mannequins and some client services. Students will learn a wide range of skills, including scalp treatments, hair shaping and styling, setting, waving, coloring, and shampooing techniques. Training also covers skin and nail care, such as manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, makeup application, and hair removal. The curriculum incorporates essential knowledge in chemistry, bacteriology, and the anatomy and physiology of the face, head, arms, and hands. This knowledge is applied through both theoretical instruction and hands-on practice on mannequins and fellow students.
Cosmetology 3 & 4 (2 units each) (615200CD, 615300CD)
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: Cosmetology 1 & 2
Cosmetology 3&4 is a three-hour course (requires 2 blocks) that meets Monday through Friday for both semesters. Second-year cosmetology students build on the foundational knowledge gained in their first year by applying theory to live models and honing their skills in a mock salon environment. Their curriculum includes advanced topics such as salon planning, management, and desairology (hairdressing for the deceased). Over the two-year program, students must complete 1,500 hours of instruction to meet the requirements set by the South Carolina Board of Cosmetology. The program integrates classroom learning, where students study relevant theoretical subjects, with hands-on lab sessions. In the lab, students practice on mannequins and provide limited client services, ensuring a comprehensive blend of academic and practical training.
