Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need to take notes?
Taking notes in class is important for several reasons. It helps you stay engaged and focused during the lesson, aids in understanding and retaining information, and provides a valuable resource for studying and reviewing later for your DBAs and exams.
Do I need to use the Pre-Algebra Toolbox?
We HIGHLY recommend using the pre-algebra toolbox as a supplement to the lessons. With guided notes and short walkthrough videos, it is an integral part of the resources we offer for students to master the material.
Are the live lessons mandatory?
Attending Live Lessons is not mandatory however it is highly recommended. Live teachers can answer the questions you have regarding skills and content, but they cannot answer exam questions for you. Additionally, students DO NOT have to go on camera or even use the microphone if they don’t want to. Communicating through the chat box is perfectly fine.
Can I move on to the next module before completing the Discussion-Based Assessment (DBA)?
Students must complete each DBA, in order, before moving on to the next module. This is one of the reasons the course is password-protected. Math builds on concepts from prior modules and skipping DBAs or Exams can only hurt the long-term mastery and understanding of the course material.
How many assignments must I complete each week?
Most students complete 2 to 3 assignments per week to complete the course within the standard semester schedule. Exceptions can be made for students with IEPs and 504s as needed. Please communicate your concerns to your instructor. Additionally, with each assessment, there is a corresponding lesson that must be completed first. We HIGHLY encourage attending the corresponding Live Lessons and completing the Toolbox notes to help you fully master the material.
When are assignments due?
Assignments are due by the end of each week.
Why are there passwords on Modules?
Passwords help to ensure students master material before moving forward. It is our goal to help you succeed in this course and passwords are a valuable tool in this regard.
How should I prepare for a DBA?
Complete the toolbox notes for the module and the corresponding DBA study guide. Take good notes. Attend the live lessons. Be sure to review before the DBA. Also, a nice quiet room, free of distractions is important so you can focus on your DBA. Ensure all assessments including the practice test are completed before your DBA.
What is the policy regarding resetting assignments?
Students are allotted TWO resets per regular assignment. Once these are used up the assignment can no longer be reset by the student. Additional resets would be on a case-by-case basis at the teacher's and IL's discretion but would require remediation.
Should I complete my DBA on Zoom or over the phone?
The choice is up to the student/parent. However, we highly recommend using Zoom to provide a visual representation of the DBA questions which the majority of students prefer to verbal questions. Your instructor can accommodate both types of DBA but you must notify them at the time of scheduling.
Do you provide tutoring?
Tutoring is mainly provided through attendance of the Live Lessons with Live Instructors. Additional help sessions can be requested. We recommend the student attend and participate in the Live Lesson for that corresponding assignment (example, 2.05) and fully complete the corresponding toolbox notes for that lesson first. The notes and Live Lesson attendance can then be submitted to the teacher for review before a help session is scheduled.
