Audio Visual Technology & Film I, II, III
Broadcast Video Production Applications
The Audio Video Technology and Film pathway offers a comprehensive three-course sequence designed to prepare students for careers in the audio-video technology and film industry or for further study in postsecondary programs. Beginning with the foundational Audio & Video Technology & Film I, students are introduced to essential concepts including terminology, safety, basic equipment operation, script writing, and studio production. This course also serves to familiarize students with various career opportunities in the field, setting the stage for more advanced study.
Building on this foundation, Audio Video Technology and Film II delves deeper into the production process, focusing on planning, writing, directing, and editing. Students engage with more complex topics such as advanced editing operations, field equipment functions, and production graphics. This second course enhances students' technical skills while also developing their creative abilities in content creation.
The pathway culminates with Audio Video Technology and Film III, a transition course emphasizing student-led projects under instructor guidance. This final course allows students to work both cooperatively and independently across all phases of production, mirroring real-world industry scenarios. A significant focus is placed on portfolio development, preparing students for either immediate entry into the workforce or further education.
Throughout the pathway, students develop a robust set of technical skills including camera operations, audio recording and mixing, lighting techniques for both studio and field productions, video editing, and graphics creation. These skills are complemented by a thorough understanding of the entire production process, from initial script writing and storyboarding to final post-production and distribution.
Professional development is woven into the curriculum, with students exploring career opportunities, creating portfolios, and gaining an understanding of industry ethics and copyright laws. The pathway also emphasizes teamwork and leadership skills, encouraging participation in organizations like SkillsUSA and the Technology Student Association (TSA). These extracurricular activities provide additional opportunities for skill development and networking within the industry.
A key strength of the pathway is its focus on hands-on learning and project-based assignments, allowing students to apply their knowledge in practical settings. By integrating current industry-standard software and equipment, the courses ensure that students are familiar with the tools and technologies used in professional settings. This comprehensive approach, combining technical proficiency, creative development, and professional skills, prepares students for the multifaceted demands of the audio-video technology and film industry, whether they choose to enter the workforce directly or pursue further education in the field.
