Examining the Teaching Profession
Teaching as a Profession Practicum
The Teaching as a Profession pathway offers a comprehensive introduction to the field of education, designed to prepare students for future careers in teaching. The pathway consists of two key courses: the foundational "Examining the Teaching Profession" and the more advanced "Teaching as a Profession Practicum."
The foundational course introduces students to essential aspects of education, including current educational technologies, effective teaching and learning strategies, and the creation of supportive learning environments. Students explore working with diverse learners and those with special needs, as well as lesson planning based on subject knowledge, student needs, community factors, and curriculum standards.
Building on this foundation, the practicum course provides valuable field experience under the supervision of a certified mentor teacher. During this hands-on component, students observe and analyze their mentor's teaching activities, develop a portfolio of skills, plan and teach lessons, and gain practical understanding of confidentiality, special needs accommodation, professionalism, and ethical behavior in education.
Throughout the pathway, students develop crucial employable skills such as communication, critical thinking, and teamwork. They learn to effectively use educational technology, create positive learning environments, adapt instruction for diverse learners, and implement various assessment and evaluation techniques. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of parent and community involvement in education.
Career exploration is a key focus, with students analyzing various career paths in education, examining requirements for different roles, and creating personal career plans. Professional development is encouraged through participation in student organizations like FCCLA or FEA, understanding professional standards and practices, and developing a personal philosophy of education.
By combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, this pathway provides students with a solid foundation in the teaching profession, preparing them for future educational pursuits and potential careers in the field of education.
