The Fitchburg Public Schools respects the right of parents to provide their children with a home education program. The Fitchburg Public Schools adheres to Massachusetts’ compulsory attendance laws, which state that children must attend school or receive approval in advance by the superintendent for a home education program. Our home education approval process is consistent with state laws, district policy, and district procedures. Fitchburg understands and acknowledges the standards set forth in case law, including the 1987 SJC decision, Care and Protection of Charles. The decision sets forth legal standards for approval of home education programs of children of compulsory school age in Massachusetts.
Homeschooling is an available option for some families who wish to provide every aspect of their child’s education. To begin a homeschooling, you must notify the Director of Enrollment Services (annually) of your intent to home school, prior to the start of the school year. The requirements involve preparing an educational plan for approval by the Fitchburg Public Schools. Assessment/progress results will also need to be submitted and approved at the end of the school year. If your child is a current Fitchburg Public Schools student, upon approval of a home school plan, your child will be withdrawn from the Fitchburg Public Schools and the resources associated with the Fitchburg Public Schools will no longer be available to you. This includes, but is not limited to, curriculum materials, books, and Chromebooks.
