The impact we achieved already

  • Establishment of an Outdoor Learning Area with respective curriculum and event integration

  • Ongoing forest and outdoor trips integrated in school activities and curriculum

  • STEM Lab: Use of recyclable materials for engineering and design projects (bottles, cardboard, bottle caps, etc.) also deconstruct to use material again vs throwing away

  • Science Lab: Science UOI revolves around sustainable practices in regards of taking care of our earth (Earth Science) and life on earth (Life Science).

  • Recycling Change Makers Club: Reviewing and determining next steps in school to be more sustainable with trash.

  • Compass Training: Some staff have undergone compass training and work with peers to evaluate sustainability in regards to the Compass Model.

  • SDG's (UN Sustainability & Development Goals) Students in 2nd, 2/3rd (in Genius hour (HWEO) ) and 6-8 in innovation and sustainability class connect projects and actions to the UN Sustainability Goals.

  • Change Makers Conference: This provided opportunities for students to be inspired by other companies or persons who made changes when change was needed in terms of sustainability.

  • Peer Experts and Asynchronous Learning (sustainability of time working as a community of learners) :

  • Students create and track skills (for example Spark Video expert or cardboard cutting and hot gluing expert) these students have completed a performance task and are publicly know to be “go to experts” when students have questions or would like to complete a performance task to become an expert themselves.

  • Students are creating asynchronous lessons with videos and google docs to teach others (for example 5 knots you need to know for camping and canoeing) these skill development lessons are to be shared publicly and become options to other students during their skill (Genius Hour / Flex times)

  • Outdoor Learning has been using natural materials (rocks, sticks, sand) to create new spaces and reusing grass in bare areas when digging.

  • Questions from staff and students have been brought up regarding regulations around using materials (building materials or old school furniture) instead of throwing them away.
