Frequently Asked Questions

Why does FIS have sustainability as part of its strategic plan?

We, at Frankfurt International School, are implementing sustainability into the DNA of our community and our daily business. Therefore, everybody is approached to check their prospective areas for improvements and the most sustainable solution.

Our daily routines should be executed in a way to save resources and considering the planetary boundaries, to minimize the impact on nature and to reduce waste. We align our work with the Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG’s) and understand the urgent need to minimize our carbon footprint through our daily action.

What are the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and why are they relevant to FIS?

On 1 January 2016, the world officially began implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—the transformative plan of action based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals—to address urgent global challenges over the next 15 years. The urgent global challenges where identified and classified into the universal 17 goals with individual targets below to help the people around the world in taking action to reduce poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. FIS has committed itself to work toward the SDGs and to take the action needed to address these global challenges for our own and our students prosperity and wellbeing.

How does FIS define Sustainability?

FIS has adopted the United Nations definition of sustainability: “Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” To achieve sustainability the school embraces the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) which provide a comprehensive framework to tackle global challenges such as poverty, access to education, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

Who is on the Sustainability Council and how did they get selected?

The Sustainability Council has been organized in five different workstreams representing all divisions, parents and the operations of FIS. Everyone can get actively involved with the workstream that applies most to one's role at FIS. The work of the workstreams are overseen by the integration team who connects all the dots, communicates with the Building & Grounds Committee and the Board of Trustees and oversees the strategic impact.

What role do students play in leading sustainability at FIS?

Students play an integral role for us. Where as in younger ages at Primary School and Early Elementary School the impact of the parents remains very important, the Earth Rescue Club and other initiatives start already at this age, to allow students to get involved. The are opportunities to join Change Maker conferences, drive a passion project or get involved at Service Clubs at all age levels.

Why is Sustainability now divided into Learning and Operations?

Sustainability is not explicitly divided into learning and operations but we realised, how important it is to educate our students about the complexity, interconnectedness of all Sustainable Development Goals and the concept thinking as well as getting actively involved and enhance our efforts toward a sustainable operations at all levels. In order to drive both initiatives parallel and gain greater impact we decided for this split.
