Heating

Saving energy when heating

  • Lowering room temperature: Even 1° C less would lead to a reduction in gas consumption of around ten billion cubic meters or the equivalent of 3.5 percent across

  • Well-insulated windows and doors can really save a lot of heating energy. In addition, heating costs are reduced. It is best to replace single-glazed windows with thermal insulation glazing. Seal apartment doors and windows well, and close curtains or shutters in the evening.

  • A lot of energy can be saved especially in daily ventilation in houses. We often ventilate with the windows tilted. This causes a lot of energy to be lost. The alternative to continuous ventilation: intermittent ventilation. This involves opening the windows completely for a few minutes. After that, close windows and keep them closed as well.

  • Do not place furniture or curtains in front of radiators and turn down the temperature when no one is in the apartment. Caution: living rooms should have a minimum temperature of 16 °C, otherwise there is a risk of mold.

  • Ventilate radiators regularly. This can be done easily with a small venting wrench, which you can get at any hardware store. Air in the heating system reduces performance and increases costs. Important: Switch off the heating pump during bleeding and turn up all thermostats to full. Afterwards, water should be added if necessary, unless this is done automatically.

  • Install programmable thermostats with smart controls: Ask your landlord or landlady if they will share the cost. However, you do not need permission. You can also replace thermostats yourself - when you move out, simply reinstall the old ones.

  • If you use the same burner for heating and hot water, switch your heating to summer mode. Some systems do this automatically, but with older models you have to adjust it manually. Usually, you set a switch to the "faucet" icon to do this. If you're unsure, check your boiler's manual.
