Earned Income Credit (EITC)

The additional questions in the Child Tax Credit section are required to be answered for both the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit.

Step 1. Select "Edit A Return In Progress"
Step 2. You should be in your return. Select "Dependent and Household Member Information" from the left side of your screen under "Forms In Return". (See image to the right)
If you do not see Dependent and Household Member Information listed, then you may need to adjust your Filing Status Information. You can do this by selecting "Filing Status Information" and selecting "Yes" for the question that asks, "Do you have Dependents and/or Household Members?"
*Please remember to select "Save and Continue" after making any changes to your return.
Step 3. Select "Edit" for the applicable dependent. If the dependent is not listed, then select "Add New" to add a new dependent. (See image below)
Step 4. Once on the Dependent and Household Member Information page, scroll all the way down to the bottom. There, you will see the question "Does this child qualify for the Child Tax Credit?" Click on the pencil. (See image below)
The questions on this page pertain to the Earned Income Credit. You must complete all questions for the Earned Income Credit to generate.
The Child Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Credit will automatically generate to the Form 1040 when applicable.
Please note Form 8867; Paid Preparer's Due Diligence Checklist must be completed for the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, and the refundable American Opportunity Tax Credit to be included in the return.
Form 8867; Paid Preparer's Due Diligence Checklist will be listed under the Credit Category once any of the credits listed above populate. This form is also available to add (see page on adding forms/schedules).
**Some states (i.e. California) have their own version of Form 8867 that is required for the state Earned Income Credit, which will be within the applicable State Return that qualifies to take credit(s).
