New publication! I am delighted to share our recent article, co-authored with Jennifer Bain, Geneviève Gates-Panneton, and Dylan Hillerbrand:

“Salzinnes and Digital Tools”

This paper explores a range of digital resources and methodologies developed around the Salzinnes Antiphoner, bringing together complementary perspectives on long-term interdisciplinary collaboration, digital editing, and computational approaches to chant sources.

A key goal is to show how these tools can support scholars in producing reliable, critically informed datasets from manuscript scans—without losing sight of the complexity of medieval sources. I hope this article will be useful for colleagues working at the intersection of plainchant studies, digital musicology, MEI encoding and OMR for manuscripts.

Jean-François Goudesenne and I are glad to announce that the book "The Materiality of Sound in Chant Manuscripts in the East" is now published and ready to be dispatched to those who wish to place an order (info here https://lnkd.in/dbhdikM7).

"The Materiality of Sound in Chant Manuscripts in the East" brings together articles on ancient Greek, Byzantine, Coptic and Armenian music scripts in the East. Together with the collection of essays published in "The Materiality of Sound in Chant Manuscripts in the West", these books discuss local scribal peculiarities and idiosyncrasies beyond the cultural and geographical contexts of production and uses of their manuscript sources.

We have dedicated the book to the memory of Ivan Moody, who began this editorial journey with us with great enthusiasm, but sadly did not get to see the final publication. Without Ivan’s expertise and dedication in the early stages of this project, the book would never have come to fruition. He has been deeply missed, and we hope that this volume serves as a tribute to his memory and legacy.

The Centre for Music Studies (CESEM ) of the NOVA University Lisbon invites expressions of interest from scholars wishing to apply for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships. The fellowship lasts one to two years, and researchers of any nationality are eligible to apply.

Interested candidates should submit the following documents by June 2 to cesem@fcsh.unl.pt, using the subject line “MSCA2025_Expression of interest”:

• A work plan (maximum 500 words)

• Curriculum Vitae

Proposals will be reviewed by the Board of Directors, and candidates will be informed of the outcome by June 9. CESEM will provide support to selected candidates throughout the entire application process.

CESEM is organised into five research groups: Early Music Studies; Music in the Modern Era (including the Caravelas – Study Group for the History of Music in Portugal and Brazil); Contemporary Music; Critical Theory and Communication (comprising two clusters: Thought and Music, and SociMus - Advanced Studies in the Sociology of Music); and Education and Human Development. In addition, eight thematic lines foster collaboration across groups on interdisciplinary topics: Luso-Brazilian Studies; Music Iconography; Music and Literature; Music and Interpretation; Opera Studies; Palaeography and Musical Edition; and Therapeutic Effects of Music.

I am truly honoured to have been elected once again to the Board of Directors of the CESEM research centre. This time, I have been invited to take on the role of Executive Secretary.

Huge thanks to CESEM for the trust! It is definitely a responsibility and a commitment—but also a really special moment. Hard to believe it has been 13 years since I arrived in Portugal for my first postdoc, without knowing a single word of Portuguese...

TISMIR special collection on Digital Musicology - Call for Papers

Deadline for submissions 31.05.2025

This special collection serves as a platform for an interdisciplinary dialogue between music technology and musicology, promoting scholarly discussions on the application and usability of digital technologies to enhance music research, and capturing contemporary trends and emerging directions in digital musicology scholarship. It is simultaneously inspired by the recent “Digital Technologies Applied to Music Research Conference: Methodologies, Projects and Challenges” (Lisbon, 06.2024), alongside reflections and consolidation celebrating a decade of contributions from the international Digital Libraries for Musicology conference (DLfM), which held its first event in London in September 2014.
