What is Gifted and Talented (GT)?
In the intermediate grades (Grades 4-5), students must be formally identified in order to receive special G/T services. Students can be referred in any of the 5 areas of G/T. At least three assessment measures are needed in order to refer a student. Students identified for the areas of General Intellectual Ability and Specific Academic Aptitude must have a score in the ninth stanine (96th percentile or above) on a nationally norm-referenced test as one of the three measures. The other two measures can include work samples, checklists, observations, etc. 4th and 5th graders who participate in the G/T program have a Gifted Services Student Plan which describes the services received. Students in these grades also receive a progress report at least twice a year.
For Families of 4th and 5th GT Students:
Per 704 KAR 3:285, Programs for the gifted and talented, the Gifted Student Services Plan (GSSP), is an education plan that properly matches a formally identified gifted student’s interest, needs, and abilities to differentiated service options and serves as a communication vehicle between the parents and school personnel. This plan will soon be available for your review in the parent portal of Infinite Campus.
The Gifted Review Committee at your student’s school, selected specific services to differentiate, replace, supplement or modify curricula to facilitate high level attainment of learning goals. The Gifted Student Service Plan (GSSP) is sent home to parents or guardians once a year. Additionally, further correspondence will occur with the GSSP Progress Report, reflecting your student’s progress in meeting the established goals. This information will be available at the end of the first and second semester.
Should you wish to file a grievance or request for consideration or appeal concerning the appropriateness of services addressed in your student’s GSSP, please contact your school’s GT Support Staff or the District Gifted and Talented Department.
