PETS
This month, I will be visiting each 2nd grade classroom to teach critical thinking skills through PETS.
The students will be introduced to Dudley the Detective and Sybil the Scientist. Dudley the Detective focuses on convergent thinking through deductive logic. Sybil the Scientist focuses on convergent thinking but through scientific analysis. Students will be asked to study the parts of things and to determine the rules for sorting.
Students will be asked to analyze objects for different attributes. Analogies are also used to determine relationships between concepts.
Critical thinking is a skill that every child needs to develop in order to succeed in school and life.
This month, I am starting a math program called Project M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians. We are starting with the unit titled, Shopping At the Bazaar: Connecting Number and Algebra with the Meerkats. The focus will be on understanding the meaning of equality and writing and solving equations using addition and subtraction. The unit will introduce students to expressions, equations, and variables.
Students have just met Dru and Teller, meerkats who are also known as “The Detective Duo.” Dru and Teller will be helping students learn about the expectations of our math community and how we can work together to investigate the world of mathematics.
