Mathematics
Why study Maths?
Mathematics gives you the underlying skills needed across all of your other subjects. You will develop your problem-solving skills by translating problems in mathematical and non-mathematical contexts, and develop reasoning skills through exercises such as presenting arguments and proofs, making deductions and drawing conclusions from mathematical information. You will gain the knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques, and a foundation of mathematical skills for further study in the subject or related areas. You will use and apply mathematical techniques and concepts, and become confident in using mathematics to solve problems.
What will I study in Years 10 and 11?
The order in which these topics will be studied will depend on whether you are in a Foundation or Higher tier group.
Number - use numerical skills in a purely mathematical way and in real-life situations.
Algebra - use letters as equivalent to numbers and as variables, demonstrate manipulative skills and construct and use graphs.
Geometry - use properties of angles. Understand a range of transformations and ideas of space and shape.
Statistics - understand the basic ideas of statistical averages and use a range of statistical techniques. Understand the basic ideas of probability.
How will I be assessed?
The IGCSE will be assessed by means of: two two-hour examination papers, both of which allow the use of calculators.
There are two tiers:
Foundation (aimed at grades 5 -1)
Higher (aimed at grades 9 - 4)
The examination is the International GCSE in Mathematics.
The examination board is Pearson Edexcel and the specification number is 4MA1. You can see the full specification here.
What else should I know?
You must study Mathematics at GCSE level.
The IGCSE builds on the work started in KS3 and you will continue to learn and practise the new concepts in lessons.
You will need to be studying the Higher tier if you want to consider A Level Mathematics.
There is a weekly drop-in Maths clinic open to any students who need additional support with their learning.
We offer our most able students the opportunity to take Further Maths as an optional extra GCSE. Lessons for this additional qualification are taught during activity slots.
