Business is an engaging, inclusive, and real-life subject. At Farlington, we aim to:
Provide a rewarding and stimulating learning experience for students
Make links between business theory and the real world
Use specific and measurable learning in preparation for the exams
Build a broad range of transferable skills and useful knowledge in preparation for further study and/or working life
Business is a dynamic and ever-changing subject, and covers broad topical issues from the global economy to the importance of people in a workplace. We encourage every student to achieve their full potential within a friendly yet determined environment.
Following the Edexcel GCSE 9-1 exam board, students will embark on a journey to develop the skills and knowledge required to sit two exams at the end of Year 11.
This course is designed to introduce students to the world of business. It is intended to provide students with an in-depth understanding of areas that should be considered when starting up a business, leading to developing an understanding of growing a business.
The core topic areas covered in the specification are: Ownership, External Influences, Human Resources, Operations, Finance and Marketing.
The course is assessed by two written papers. Both papers are 1 hour 45 minutes in length:
Paper 1 - Investigating Small Business - consists of four questions requiring a mixture of multiple-choice answers, short answers (1-6 marks) and extended responses (9-12 marks). This paper is worth 50% of the total marks.
Paper 2 - Growing a Business - consists of four questions requiring a mixture of multiple-choice answers, short answers (1-6 marks) and extended responses (9-12 marks). This paper is worth 50% of the total marks.
Each of the questions will be assessed against AO1a/b (knowledge), AO2 (application), AO3a (analysis) and AO3b (evaluation).
The examination board is Edexcel and the specification number is 1BS0. You can see the full specification here.
Our curriculum is implemented in many ways, including taught lessons and project-based learning opportunities.
Recent projects have included 'The Cereal Project', for which the students acted as marketing executives for Kellogg's.
Out-of-class experiences help embed learning and ignite a sense of excitement in a student's attitude to classroom activities.
