Year 7 pupils will take part in a Creative Carousel; studying Design & Technology, Dance and Art for two terms each.
Design and Technology requires students to develop a range of design skills with a focus on creativity and using the materials present to them and project briefs to create unique and functional designs that meet or exceed those briefs.
To assist them in this, they will be guided, demonstrated and instructed on the use of various machines, tools and processes and use them in a variety of methods to create items of high quality from a range of materials.
This will develop student’s confidence within the subject whilst building a foundation of safe working practice and strategies for design that will serve them well as they progress further with their D&T journey towards GCSE and beyond.
A quick introductory project to introduce students to the new workshop and various pieces of equipment whilst showing that quality control and care is required in practical areas of the subject.
A mini bird box container with a small metal pencil sharpener. Students will need to apply their skills from the keyring to construct the roof. Careful use of the drill and elements of graphic design in considering packaging for their finished product.
A full size bird box constructed using a number of traditional woodworking techniques including different wood joints.
Students will need to carefully follow instructions and use a number of hand saws and tools to construct the bird box.
They will then be able to apply their design skills in considering how the exterior can be decorated.
Skills will be assessed with each material used but students will have each product/project assessed on the following areas:
Analysis of the task/brief
Research of relevant areas and the design task
Designing - generating and communicating ideas
Prototyping - the safe use of tools, machine sand processes to create high quality products
Evaluating - reflecting on the success of their work at various stages but also the success of other work and existing products.
Fine Art stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.
Drawing a portrait in pencil and scaling up using the grid method
Creating a watercolour study based on the drawing
Researching and looking at the work of Sarah Jarrett for ideas and inspiration
Experimenting with a range of collage papers on top of enlarged copy of drawing
Creation of a final image- A Mixed-media Collage Portrait.
During each project, students are assessed on all areas of work.- drawing and painting, development and experimentation, and the final piece.
There is also a self assessment at the end in the form of a written evaluation.
