Our Mission

As English is part of the humanities, we see our mission reflected in these parts of the Board’s Core Beliefs: Education of “the whole child” and refusal to “pursue ranking and high average test scores as our primary objectives;” rather, “The true ‘outcome’ for a Fairport Education is success in life; taking civic responsibility, being caring and respectful individuals, becoming healthy contributors with a lifelong desire to learn.” Civic responsibility has to do with citizenship, which we see as the ultimate goal of public education. The Board’s values are those borne of an understanding of one’s culture and one’s context in that culture. The study of culturally significant literature provides such a context and a window into the culture at large and into the students themselves. We want students to read such literature and to think critically and write effectively about literature, as well as about current cultural issues. To help students become lifelong learners, we want them to think critically about what the questions are and learn how to do research to find answers. In brief, we strive to use our skills, talents, passions, and knowledge to develop the skills, talents, passions, and knowledge of Fairport students.
