Viewpoints: The Study of Diverse Perspectives in a Multicultural America
This course will challenge students to contemplate the different cultural viewpoints of our 21st-century America. Students will use the multicultural lens to evaluate social issues at FHS and in our world community. Students will analyze how the multicultural lens empowers 21st-century civic responsibility. The readings for this class cannot hope to be representative of the emerging multicultural canon; nonetheless, we will explore a variety of different culturally significant topics and themes represented in literature and digital texts. The work required for this class will center students’ attention on developing the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This class will be challenging not only in its required workload, but in the seminar discussion of complex issues such as identity, justice, representation, culture, politics, and art. Project-based learning opportunities will challenge students to research identity and its relationship to the American experience.
