AP English 12 Literature & Composition
An AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone.

Students will increase their ability to read and critically analyze various genres of literary and media expression as well as increase their ability to respond proficiently and appropriately within those same genres. They will learn to read, write and present reflective pieces, creative pieces, responses to literature, functional documents, informational essays or reports, analytical pieces, persuasive pieces, and informal pieces for various purposes to a level of proficiency necessary to function on the job, within an academic setting, and within society.
